Collaborative Editions

Collaborative Editions brings artists together with Creased Press to create small, handmade artist books, typically produced in editions of 2 to 6 copies, with a maximum of 10 depending on the project's scope and available funding.

The collaboration begins with form and content. The collaborating artist provides the content, which may include artwork, writing, photographs, drawings, archival materials, or other creative contributions. Creased Press works with the artist to develop a physical form that responds to their ideas, allowing the book itself to become an extension of the work.

Together, we explore the possibilities of printing, folding, binding, and material experimentation. Books may take the form of traditional codices, accordion structures, sewn bindings, sculptural objects, or interactive and unconventional formats. Production may incorporate letterpress, screenprinting, relief printing, monotype, photopolymer printing, and other printmaking techniques.

Each edition emerges through a shared creative process that brings together the artist's vision and Creased Press's approach to experimental bookmaking, transforming ideas and materials into intimate, tactile, and unique publications.

Form and Content:

Collaboration and Production

The collaboration will begin with a series of meetings, either in person or via Zoom, to discuss the project's concept, format, materials, production methods, edition size, timeline, and other logistics.

Each project will be produced as a limited edition, generally ranging from 1 to 6 copies, depending on the project's scope, production costs, and available funding. Larger editions of up to 10 copies may be considered when feasible.

The creative process will be collaborative, with the artist and Creased Press working together to develop a book that reflects the artist's vision while exploring the possibilities of printmaking, folding, material experimentation, and bookmaking.

Edition Distribution and Sales

The collaborating artist will receive the majority of available copies from each edition and retain the right to keep, exhibit, gift, or sell their copies independently.

Depending on the edition size and mutual agreement, up to 2 copies may be reserved:

  • 1 copy for the Center for Book Arts collection

  • 1 exhibition copy for book fairs, exhibitions, and presentations

The final allocation of copies will be discussed and agreed upon before production, with priority given to the collaborating artist. For smaller editions, the number of reserved copies may be reduced to ensure the artist receives the majority.

Creased Press will not sell any copies without the artist's prior agreement. Any sales through the Creased Press website, Center for Book Arts bookstore, book fairs, exhibitions, or other venues will be arranged collaboratively, including agreement on pricing and the distribution of proceeds.

The collaborating artist will have the first right to sell any remaining available copies before they are offered for sale or distribution by Creased Press.

The intention is to prioritize the artist's ownership and ability to benefit from their work while allowing Creased Press to facilitate production, exhibitions, and opportunities for wider public engagement.

Edition Rights and Reproduction

The collaborating artist retains all intellectual property rights to their original artwork and creative contributions.

Once an edition is completed, it will not be reproduced, expanded, or reprinted without mutual agreement between the artist and Creased Press.

Creased Press will not reproduce or use the artist's work beyond the agreed-upon edition without permission.

Photographs and documentation of the completed books may be used by Creased Press for promotional, archival, educational, exhibition, and grant application purposes, including publication on the Creased Press website and social media, with appropriate artist credit.

Collaborative Approach

Creased Press approaches artist book publishing as a collaborative and experimental practice rather than a conventional commercial publishing model.

Each book is conceived as an opportunity to explore the relationship between artistic practice, material, form, and the experience.

Project Funding and Production Costs

Creased Press is an independently operated publishing initiative, and the majority of project funding is currently self-funded.

A modest amount of material support is provided through the Artist-in-Residence program at the Center for Book Arts. However, this support does not cover the full costs of materials, printing, fabrication, and edition production.

To help offset these expenses and support the production of collaborative editions, Creased Press will pursue additional funding through grants, foundation support, and potential crowdfunding initiatives.

Production methods, materials, and edition sizes will be determined collaboratively, taking into consideration the project's artistic goals, available resources, and funding.

Any significant expenses or financial contributions beyond the available project budget will be discussed and mutually agreed upon in advance. Collaborating artists will not be expected to contribute financially without prior discussion and agreement.

The goal is to make each collaboration financially sustainable while maintaining the artistic integrity and experimental nature of the work.

Exhibitions & Opportunities

Collaborative Editions may be presented through exhibitions, artist book fairs, and other public programs associated with Creased Press and Sok Song’s residency at the Center for Book Arts.

Selected editions may also be presented at future artist book fairs, exhibitions, pop-ups, and other Creased Press or Sok Song projects. The reserved exhibition copy allows the work to continue traveling to exhibitions and fairs without requiring either collaborator to provide a copy from their personal portion of the edition.
